Personal Trainers, Fitness Instructors and fitness business owners are all too aware of the risks involved in prescribing exercise and the need for a consistent standard of professional practice in the Australian health and fitness industry.
Pre-exercise screening is used to identify people who may have medical conditions which put them at a higher risk of an adverse event during physical activity/exercise. It’s a filter or ‘safety net’ to help determine if the potential benefits of exercise outweigh the risks for an individual.
In 2010 three national organisations – Fitness Australia, Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) – standardised the way pre-exercise screening was undertaken in the Australian health and fitness industry. In partnership, they’ve developed the Australian adult pre-exercise screening system which provides an evidence-based system for identifying and managing health risks for exercise. In 2019 a newly developed version of the APSS has been released which includes a revised Tool and User Guide. Download the latest versions below.
