Everyone has the potential to value, develop and maintain positive physical activity behaviours for life.
Physical literacy involves holistic lifelong learning through movement and physical activity. It delivers physical, psychological, social and cognitive health and wellbeing benefits. The Sport Australia Position Statement on Physical Literacy outlines our commitment to creating a healthier generation of more active Australians.
The Australian Physical Literacy Framework activates this commitment through the establishment of a common language to support all Australians develop their physical literacy, at every stage of life.
Physical literacy is about building the skills, knowledge and behaviours that give us the confidence and motivation to lead active lives.
Physical literacy gives you:
- physical skills and fitness
- the attitudes and emotions that motivate you to be active
- the knowledge and understanding of how, why and when you move
- the social skills to be active with others.

“Fitness Australia enthusiastically endorses the Australian Physical Literacy Framework and supports the inherent philosophy that physical fitness is only one aspect of an individual’s holistic wellbeing that encompasses their physical, psychological, social and cognitive whole."
"The Framework has relevance for all Australians and acknowledges an individual’s life journey taking into account their demographics, abilities and settings.” - Barrie Elvish, CEO of Fitness Australia.
Childhood has been identified as a critical developmental phase for establishing healthy behaviours, with the potential to ultimately encourage longer term positive health decisions during adulthood. For children and young people, exercise provides fundamental health benefits to the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems and assists in the maintenance of a healthy body weight.
To support the increasingly diverse range of children’s fitness services emerging in Australia, Fitness Australia has developed the Children’s Health and Fitness Services Guidelines.
