Female only fitness class tackles domestic violence
The response from Gladstone's first female-only defence class for domestic violence is evidence it's been a long time coming.
Held at Gladstone's PCYC, program organiser Bec Frost said it's advertised as a fun fitness program but was really designed to help build positive relationships and emotional strength.
"The program is called RUBY and it is an acronym for rise up and be yourself," Ms Frost said.
"In the session we do anything from circuit training, going to the gym or boxing classes."
Ms Frost said the class was an opportunity for women who had been in a domestic violence relationship and for women who were currently in one to regain their self-esteem and confidence.
"The program originally started in 2012 but it was only at Beenleigh," she said.
"It's taken a few years but it's fantastic that we now have a service like this in Gladstone."
Ms Frost said a police officer and fitness instructor also attend the class and get involved.
"Everyone gets engaged and it's a lot of fun," she said.
"It's the first time we've had something like this for Gladstone and it's incredibly important.
"We're also lucky enough o get some funding from Coordinated Community Response to Domestic and Family Violence so we can provide morning teas after the session.
"The best part is seeing women walk out with huge smiles on their faces."
