With Queensland gyms and fitness facilities now reopened, Fitness Australia is calling on the industry to ‘do the right thing’ and abide by the Queensland Chief Health Officer approved COVID Safe Plan to ensure the safety of all gym users and showcase operational excellence of all fitness facilities across the state.
Fitness Australia CEO Barrie Elvish said the organisation had worked closely with the Queensland Government and Chief Health Officer to develop a COVID Safe Plan to allow gyms to safely operate with more than 20 people and the industry has responded well to the Plan.
“Fitness Australia has worked collaboratively and extensively with the Queensland Government to get the COVID Safe Plan in place to allow gyms to operate with more people. We know this is a huge step forward for the industry, both in terms of welcoming more people back to gym but also to ensure the financial viability of fitness businesses,” Mr Elvish said.
“The fitness industry in Queensland has responded well to the reopening of gyms and other facilities across the state. It has also been very encouraging to see so many in the community resume their ‘normal’ gym routine as people continue to come out of isolation and keep active for their mental health and wellbeing."
“However, we can’t stress enough the importance of correctly following the implementing the guidelines outlined in the Plan. We need all fitness facilities to show leadership and ensure they are compliant with the COVID Safe Plan. This will ensure all gym users have the peace of mind their health and safety are a priority, while demonstrating the critical need for fitness services to be available to all Queenslanders.
Mr Elvish said many businesses were doing the right thing and showing their commitment to industry excellence.
“Many businesses are doing the right thing and are 100% committed to doing whatever it takes to stay open and keep their facility safe. We are continuing to work with our members to ensure they have the support they need to implement and ensure compliance with the COVID Safe Plan,” Mr Elvish said.
“Fitness Australia is aware of spot inspections being carried out by Queensland Police, who are ensuring gyms are doing the right thing and adhering to the COVID Safe Plan. What we don’t want to see is cases where a few facilities do the wrong thing and the whole industry is impacted with tighter restrictions.”
The COVID Safe Plan follows the release of the Framework for Operations in the Fitness Industry Under COVID-19 Restrictions earlier this month and is part of Fitness Australia’s COVID Safety Plan which has been endorsed by industry leaders across the sector and Occupational and Environment Physician Dr Andrea James MBBS FAFOE(RACP) FRACGP GDOEH.
