Blood Pressure - best practice measurement
High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the major modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. One in three Australian adults have hypertension, but this is not always recognised because hypertension usually has no symptoms.
Currently, there are many problems with the way that blood pressure (BP) is measured in clinical practice. In particular, when doctors measure BP a ‘white coat effect’ may cause BP to be elevated, and this may result with inappropriate diagnosis and therapy. Fitness leaders are in a unique position to screen people for the presence of hypertension and, in doing so, to improve individual outcomes related to cardiovascular disease.
Scientists, Dr Martin Schultz and Associate Professor James Sharman (Menzies Research Institute Tasmania) have developed a workshop to help fitness professionals measure, interpret and manage their client’s blood pressure in a manner which is best practice. The full day workshop is being run in Hobart (Sat 16 Nov) and Launceston (23 Nov).
