Our FILEX Immersive wrap up
Over the weekend 13th - 14th October, the inaugural FILEX Immersive event was held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in conjunction with The Fitness Show. FILEX Immersive was designed to offer greater opportunity for fitness professionals to deepen their knowledge and skills in two key areas: Fat Loss and Leadership. The event consisted of 13 sessions with 10 world-class speakers over 2 days.
The speakers included Craig Harper, Paul Taylor, Greg Sellar, Chantal Brodrick, Andrew Simmons, Vanessa Leone, Dr Cam McDonald, Benjamin Siong, Kira Sutherland and Eleni Psillakis. The speakers all hailed from various backgrounds from exercise science, neuroscience and epigenetics to fitness business coaching, entrepreneur and high performance. See the full list of speakers.
To stay ahead of the game in a competitive fitness landscape, it’s essential to keep abreast of the latest information available. In order to be the best, it helps to learn from the best.
Below we've collated some key learnings from each of the speakers to provide some insight into the event:
Craig Harper, High Performance Expert: We are never always motivated, consciously we're all kind-of motivated, for high performance we need to make motivation a habit, subconsciously.
Greg Sellar, Leadership Hacker: If you look after yourself with the primary objective of being aware of your thinking and behaviour, you'll have the best possible opportunity to create a work culture that has a healthy immune system.
Chantal Brodrick, Fitness Business Coach: High performers: are engaged listeners, seek efficiency, are dedicated contributors, passionate learners and practice mindfulness/movement.
Andrew Simmons, Fitness Business Entrepreneur: The stages of coaching; Actions speak louder than words, everyone acts in a certain way for a reason, seek to understand rather than being understood > ask, listen, formulate.
Paul Taylor, Neuroscientist and Exercise Physiologist: Leadership tips: have a purpose, know your role, achieve equity, be fair and encourage competency in staff.
Dr Cam McDonald, Epigenetics Specialist: We need to introduce the right thing, for the right person at the right time. No two clients are the same, we need to understand them; their genetics, hormones and environment.
Vanessa Leone, Movement Coach: It's not about smashing your clients, it's about work to rest ratios during HIIT sessions - which is important for recovery and much more!
Ben Siong, International Strength Expert: “Have you heard the saying? You are what you eat? I disagree - You are not what you eat, you are what you digest, absorb and break down effectively... we are overfed and undernourished, we are worried about numbers & calories - not nutrition.”
Kira Sutherland, Sports Nutritionist and Naturopath: Her advice for trainers: “often we assume that clients have the obvious knowledge we do, yet learning becomes intrinsic if we don’t explain to clients how their body burns fuel.”
Eleni Psillakis, Health Educator: Create healthy habits, first you hate it, then you love it, then you can't live without it. Our words feed our thoughts which then feed our actions.
